Collective Worship
Daily Prayer
Each pupil has the opportunity to celebrate two acts of prayer every day. The first takes place during form time. The Values@SJW PowerPoint has been introduced to support pupils with their spirituality and personal development. This PowerPoint contains a daily reflection which is led by the pupils and their tutor in their form room.
Form tutors are also provided with prayer and reflection cards for their form room. These cards can be used to support their time of prayer. Each form room has a prayer corner with a prayer cloth. The theme of this corner and the colour of the cloth link in with the liturgical calendar (for example, purple cloth during Lent and Advent).
The second time of prayer, takes place at 3.05pm every day. This is our afternoon prayer. During this time, the whole school joins together on Teams to pray as a school community. Following the prayer, pupils are given the opportunity to reflect on the theme of the prayer and consider how it links to their learning in the classroom.
Weekly Worship
Once a week, a whole year group weekly worship takes place in the hall or on Teams. This allows all members of our school community, pupils and staff, to reflect upon our own personal journey, our vocation, as well as our mission as a school.
Weekly Worship is often led by the Head of Year focusing on a variety of themes including Careers Week, Anti-bullying & Remembrance. This is always rooted within the Catholic faith, using Sunday's Gospel reading to support reflection. Each Weekly Worship links to the Gospel used in Mass on the weekend before. Pupils have the opportunity the next day to reflect on the message from the Weekly Worship and discuss how they can respond.
Mass & Services
To enhance the spiritual development of our pupils, Mass is celebrated at the beginning of each term. Pupils in Year 7 also have an additional ‘Welcome Mass’ when they join the St John Wall community. Pupils from a variety of years and backgrounds offer to take part in the Mass in many ways, such as reading, serving and taking part in the offertory. All of the pupils who volunteer for these roles treat them with reverence and respect.
Pupils in Year 7-10 also have the opportunity to celebrate Mass together as a class at St Augustine's Parish Church. This is on a rota, meaning all pupils are able to do this twice per year. Where Mass cannot take place, Mrs Ellis leads a class service focusing on our theme for the term.
An end of term service is celebrated to reflect on the achievements of our pupils. In addition to the summer term, these services take place at Christmas and Easter, reminding our pupils of some of the key Catholic beliefs that are at the heart of our school.
Reconciliation services are held during Advent and Lent for all pupils.
